Mazatlán
Overview
Mazatlán is well positioned on the central west coast of Mexico, just opposite the southern tip of Baja California. The name alone instantly evokes romantic images of beach-going fun at a world-renowned vacation destination. With some of the greatest beaches on Mexico’s Pacific Coast, sport fishing, sailing, and championship golfing are among the many sports practiced by tourists and residents of the city. Buying real estate, including buying homes in Mazatlan has become more popular than ever with the growing foreign community.
La Zona Dorada, Mazatlán’s beach zone to the north of the city, is a world unto itself more popular with tourists. Old Mazatlán, on the other hand contains the port and the downtown, with its spectacular 19th-century cathedral. A larger city, with a population of about six hundred thousand, Mazatlán has great shopping, both in its big shopping centers and in more intimate settings for handicrafts and local fare. Living in Mazatlan is a real treat for more and more retirees.
Mazatlán’s landscape is dominated by El Faro, a lighthouse built in the late 19th century atop the high hill of Cerro del Crestón, overlooking the old town peninsula. Several islands face the city, among them the Isla de Venados which is primarily a nature reserve. The Playa Norte, or North Beach, arcs from Old Mazatlán toward the more touristy Zona Dorada. The southern area includes the city’s downtown with gorgeous examples of historical architecture. During the last few years this area has undergone renovation grown into an exciting artistic and bohemian area.
